Legal Argumentation

Legal Argumentation

(4 ECTS)

Dr. Martin Caminada

The teaching material for the course is the book “Argumentation in artificial intelligence” (I. Rahwan, Springer, 2009). Starting from Dung’s abstract theory, we discuss how to instantiate abstract arguments, how to determine the acceptable arguments, and how to use the theory to formalize legal reasoning. After the course, the students can select an argumentation semantics for an application, they can formalize legal argumentation at the abstract and at the instantiated level, and they are aware of the main argumentation schema.
